Population of Bargarh District as per   1991 cencus was 12,07,172 ( 6,09,916 Male + 5,97,256 Female)    out of which  Total SC population was 2,22,562  (18.43%)wich includes  SC Male population of 1,72,034 (18.50%) & SC Female population of  1,10,528   ( 18.36 %)  Total SC population of the State was51,29,314  out of which (25,96,464 SC male and 25,32,850 SC Female) . ST population of Bargarh district as per 1991 cencus was 2,36,072  which include 1,18,180 ST Male and 1,17,892 ST Female . Although many Blocks of Bargarh District is rich in SC & ST population it was not declared as a Schedule Area  of Orissa. Where as basing on the criteria of SC/ST population other district of Orissa like Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Koraput, Telkoi , Chambua & Barbil Tahasil  of Keonjhar subdivision and Kuchinda Tahasil of Sambalpur district declared as the Schedule Area by the Central Government .( In pursuance of Article 46 of constitution of India it is the duty of State Government to implement various scheme and programme for around development of schedule tribe . Besides in order to protect the interest of schedule tribes  and to defend them against exploitation the Governor has been vested with powers to modify the State and Central legislation in their applicability to the schedule area and frame regulations for good government in this area.) The following protective regulation are in forced  in Orissa for the protection of Schedule Tribes.

As per 2001 cencus population of Bargarh District is 1346,000 ( 681,000 Male + 665,000 Female)  Which is 3.67% of the total population of Orissa . Population growth of Bargarh district in between (1981-1991) is 16.93 %  and it is 11.47  % during (1991& 2001 cencus) .The Sex ratio of Bargarh District was 979 female per 1000 male (1991 Cencus) & it reduce to 976 in 2001 cencus. Similarly population density also increase from 207 per sq Km (1991) to 231 per sq Km in 2001 cencus.  There was  487,000  nos of Educated  person  (1991) in Bargarh District out of which 329,000 Male and 158,000 were female. But in 2001 cencus the total numbers of educated person increase to 755,000 ( which includes 464,000 educated male and 291,000 educated female)  Literacy rate of Bargarh during 1991 cencus was 47.65% which increase to 64.13 % , Male literacy rate was 63.78% in 1991 cencus & 77.93% in 2001 cencus, while female literacy rate is 31.21% in 1991 & 50.03% in 2001 .In 1991 the literacy rate of Orissa was  63.09 % (Male) , 34.68% (Female) and 49.09 % (Total)  while in 2001 it is 75.95% (Male), 50.97%(Female) and 63.61% (total)
